OCT’s new series about Oceanside's thriving Arts & Culture scene is funded, in part, by the City of Oceanside’s Arts Commission. One program covered in the series includes the Art Walk in Downtown Oceanside. This program features interviews with artists, visitors, and Art Walk creators, and showcases this cultural gem that takes place every month in Oceanside. KOCT’s Station Manager Jacob Rush attended the 2015 National conference of the Alliance for Community Media that was held in Pasadena. There he received, on behalf of KOCT, a Hometown Media Award for KOCT’s “18th Annual Inter-Tribal Powwow”. The Hometown Media Awards recognize the best community media programming of 2014, and include student, independent producer, and access center professional categories. Judges scored over 1,000 entries that were submitted from around the country. 

The KOCT crew for this award winning program was:  Producer Angela Miranda, Videographer, Angela Wong and Grip, Tamara Ilich. The program was edited by Brandee Wyse Bovaird. 

Thanks to Promise Yee with The Coast News for an article about two large grants that our Oceanside Public Library received.  KOCT hopes to work with the Historical Society and the Library to tell the Latino story in Oceanside. KOCT has an archive of programs and interviews with Latino residents about our community and their history in Oceanside. We hope with this grant that KOCT can produce additional historical programs. Born and Brewed in Oceanside

The Hops Highway is the fun designation of Highway 78 because of the many local breweries that have been established along this route from Oceanside to Escondido. “Born & Brewed: Oceanside” is a new KOCT program about the big impact craft beer is having on Oceanside and is produced by the City of Oceanside and KOCT.

In this video, we speak with Oceanside locals and brewers about the growth of craft beer and its impact on Oceanside’s economy and culture. Hosted by Marie-Claire Lemoine; featuring Chris Cochran of Stone Brewing Company, Mark Mericle and JJ Synder of Legacy Brewing Company, and Jeff and Dande Bagby of Bagby Beer Company. 

The program’s Producer and Editor is the talented Angela Wong who has produced a number of programs for KOCT. This is some of her finest work and I wish her well in her future endeavors!

A North County Adventure

KOCT had a good turnout for the premier of “A North County Adventure” – the first comprehensive north county tourism video shot in Hi-definition. The short program features beautiful aerial footage of our Pier, Mission and other north county attractions.

In attendance on Tuesday night were KOCT Board Chairman Liz Rhea, Vice-Chair Margret Merlock and board Secretary Kierstin Hill.  Board members Frank Gould and Gwen Price were also part of the festivities. “A North County Adventure” was funded by a Community Enhancement Grant of $10,000. This program was set up using a percentage of Transient Occupancy Tax Revenues to stimulate tourism and promote the economy. KOCT is grateful for the support of the tourism industry, visitors and the San Diego Board of Supervisors who oversee this program.

On hand Tuesday night to see the new video was 5^th District Supervisor Bill Horn, Chamber of Commerce CEO David Nydegger and Leslee Gaul, President/CEO of Visit Oceanside Conference & Visitors Bureau.  KOCT thanked Supervisor Horn for his support as well as the three Underwriters for the program:  John Osborne with AT&T, Amber Ter-Vrugt  with Scripps Health and Visit Oceanside’s Leslee Gaul.  The narrator for the program is Meg (Banta) Ford who has worked with KOCT on many projects — you’ll recognize her unique voice from her many years on local radio.

KOCT’s Executive Director, Tom Reeser, explained that a unique aspect of the grant was the creation of a hi-definition video ‘bank’ –images of north county that will soon be available to agencies who promote north county tourism.  Visit Oceanside will administer this service and it fills a long- requested need by agencies hoping to promote tourism in Oceanside and north county but needing iconic footage. They now have it—and in hi-definition.

Tom acknowledged that the beautiful images were made possible by the creative team of Station Manager Jacob Rush and Editor Miguel Blanco. Jake produced the program and shot much of the footage including the helicopter aerial footage. KOCT hired a Carlsbad helicopter company for the aerial footage, thus keeping the grant funding in north county.

KOCT has been producing award-winning tourism and promotional videos for over 30 years.  Tourism is a clean industry that creates jobs and brings much needed revenue to our city to help pay for public services, roads and infrastructure.

KOCT’s camera crews and editors have been very busy and  they want to share to share their efforts with you! Oceanside High School Spectrum has just been edited and features interviews with Dr. Ron Pirayoff, the Principle of Oceanside High School. Lou Fosnut, OHS Counselor and Dr. Jim Fosnut, OUSD Consultant were also interviewed. Finally the talented host for the program, Robert Rasul interviews retired CIF Championship Coach John Carroll. Thanks to KOCT volunteer Maya Maryvilla for her awesome editing efforts!

Juneteenth 2015 was another annual community event our camera crews attended. Host Elaine Swann finds out about the origins of this event and meets an amazing saxophone player too.

Filipino Cultural Celebration 2015—This years Filipino Celebration was well attended and remember that it's easy to share these brief programs with friends by sending this link to them. The KOCT crew recently attended the event How Can You Reduce and Recycle. Held at the El Corazon Senior center, the event promoted conservation and sustainability. It included water and energy conservation and everyday things we can do to reduce waste. 

KOCT ‘s camera crew also attended the North County Water Summit at the Vista Civic Center. The topic was “The Reality of Today’s Water Issue-Solutions Through Innovation.

KOCT PROMOTES THE ARTS

Early this year KOCT was pleased to receive $3,000 from the City of Oceanside Arts Commission to produce three short programs about Oceanside’s thriving Arts & Culture activities. KOCT is matching the Arts Commissions’ funding and the first program has just been completed by KOCT talented Producer/Editor Peter Bonscher.  Our goal with this grant series is to highlight some of the other non-profits arts programs that were also funded by the Oceanside Arts Commission.

The Arts Commission grant has helped kick start a new program by the Boys and Girls Club of Oceanside called, Art of the Masters, which provides kids an opportunity to delve deeper into the contributions of world renowned artists throughout history, helping to solidify the Club’s commitment to educating the youth of today for the needs of tomorrow.

 The Boys and Girls Clubs of Oceanside have been offering after school and summer programs for North County youth since 1952.  KOCT is pleased to be able to highlight this new arts program.  The great thing about our VOD or Video On Demand service is that it’s easy for you to share programs like this with others AND watch the programs on your computer, tablet or smart phone.

Peter has done a great job kicking off this new grant series and it follows the great news we received last week for another program in our Arts and Culture series:  The “18^th Annual Inter-Tribal Powow” has won a 2015 Hometown Media Award—a national and very competitive video competition.  That program was funded in part by a grant from the Oceanside Charitable Foundation and is another good example of the spotlight that KOCT is shining on our local community. 2015 Hometown Media Award Winner!

We are proud to announce that KOCT is a 2015 Hometown Media Award winner! The Hometown Media Awards recognize the best Community Media Programming of 2014, KOCT’s program “18^th Annual Inter-Tribal Powwow” was the winner in the Access Center Professional category of   Community Events- Parades/Festivals.

The Producer of the program was KOCT’s Angela Miranda who also shot some of the footage. The Videographer was   Angela Wong and the Grip was Tamara Ilich. The program was edited by a talented college intern during the summer of 2014.  Editor   Brandee Wyse is a Native American who shared her talents with KOCT, learned new editing skills and is continuing her education at California State Long Beach.  

KOCT’s Station Manager Jacob Rush will receive the  award  at the 2015 Hometown Media Awards Celebration on August 13th in Pasadena. This celebration is being held in conjunction with the 2015 ACM Annual Conference.

KOCT is a community television station that gives young people real world experience—but as you can see from the following shot bios of this  award winning team—they have a wealth of experience and education that they share with KOCT too :

Production Supervisor, Angela Miranda

KOCT's Production Supervisor, Angela Miranda, graduated from Cal State, University of Los Angeles with a B.A. in Telecommunication and Films.  Angela has been and still is a mentor of film to High School students. She worked previously as an Assistant to the Director of Reel Rasquache Film Festival (Latino Film Festival) in 2009. Angela is a good example of a KOCT employee with multiple video production skills: including camera, editing, audio, graphics design and producing (Oceanside Spectrum).

The Production Team Supervisor, Angela Wong, graduated from Ithaca College in 20125 and studied Cinema Production.  She moved to Oceanside and joined KOCT in July 2013. In her spare time, she enjoys surfing. She hopes to start her own film production company in the future. 

Production team member, Tamara Ilich

Tamara Ilich, a KOCT Production team member, attends MiraCosta College and has had a year internship at the station.  She loves to dance hip hop/break-dance and make short films in her free time.  She has participated in several studio and on location productions.  She hopes to transfer to Cal State Fullerton for Video Production. Tamara is proud to be a part of the KOCT Production Team.

Editor, Brandee Wyse

Editor, Brandee Wyse sent KOCT this bio update: I began at KOCT as an intern during the summer of 2014. Eager to take the opportunity, she spent her very first day entrusted with editing footage for the Mission San Luis Rey Inter-Tribal Powwow. By summer's end, the project was complete, and today, she is incredibly grateful to her community station for giving her such an opportunity. 

Outside of KOCT, Brandee has competed in national film competitions and won awards from San Diego's IVIE Film Festival, the Girl’s World Expo, and the Gulf Island Film and Television School in British Columbia, Canada. She has studied Telecommunications in Film and Television at California State University Los Angeles, recently working in associate producing and stage management positions for plays while directing, shooting, and editing short films with her peers, and will now transfer to Cal State Long Beach to complete her degree in their selective program, Narrative Production. Congrats on the win, and thank you again for such a great summer last year! Cheers! ~Brandee~

21^st Annual Oceanside Independence Parade 

The 21st Annual Oceanside Independence Parade was colorful and festive with funky floats, beauty queens, military bands, extravagant cars and fire trucks. Thanks to Main Street Oceanside, its hosts, volunteers and Tri-City Medical Center, for participating in this year’s 21^st annual parade.

KOCT has covered the Oceanside parades for the last 30 years and our talented crew was set up by the Oceanside Civic Center to capture the colorful tradition.

Staff included Miguel Blanco, Tamara Ilich, Toby Maysey, Damian Mickey, Tyler Jardine, Bill Peters, Jake Rush, Phoenix VonHendy, Micheyl Steinway, Addison Wolf, and Angela Miranda.

The hosts of parade were Oceanside’s Jim Schroder and Kristi Hawthorne.

The show will air on KOCT’s Community Channel 18 and can be seen in Oceanside on Cox Cable and county-wide on AT&T’s U-Verse (channel 99).   Also, if you have family or friends who don’t live in Oceanside they can still watch  your little baton-twirler perform in the  parade by going to KOCT.ORG and clicking on the “Video on Demand” banner at the top of the home page.
